Tonight:

From the Principal for the Day:

Monday, May 17, 2010
I loved being principal. It is fun. We went outside and looked to see if students and parents are following safety rules. We went inside and announced the Focus drawing and then I went upstairs and asked all of the 5th graders where they are going for middle school.
Here is some information I discovered:
- Merrill Middle School: 20
- Hamilton: 9
- DSA: 7
- GALS: 5
- Morey: 4
- Hill: 3
- DSST: 2
- The Green School: 1
- St. John’s: 1
- Christ the King: 1
- RMSEL: 1
- Colorado Academy: 1
- Kent: 1
- 3 students moving outside of Denver Public Schools
I went over to Merrill Middle School with Ms. Gibson and observed 8th graders reading with Ms. Kozma’s class. My Grandpa Kurt went to Merrill Middle School. I learned that Principal Stacy Miller and I share the same birthday, May 28.
We had lunch from Noodles & Company in the principal’s office and then we did recess and lunch duty and answered emails. We then worked on signage for the bathrooms with Gary Younger from Protective Coatings.
I shared popsicles with 110, my class. I took my friend Rhiannon to help me with bus duty. I learned that principals do a lot of work. See you all at Concert on the Green.
-- Tatum Armstrong, your principal for the day
From the Principal:
Saying Goodbye and Hello ...
We are saying goodbye to several staff members. Ligia Gibson is completing her intern year with Cory and Merrill and will be the Assistant Principal at Ford Elementary School next year. Tamara Bilewski has been our GT itinerant teacher this year and we have all appreciated her expertise. Next year, Brian Weaver, the GT rep at Merrill, will also be at Cory to support our staff and our GT students. Julie Teras has been an intern all year with Mr. McCarthy, our school psychologist. She is currently looking for a position of her own and getting married over the summer. Jan Struharik has been with us as a .50 ESL Teacher supporting the needs of our second language learners. We do not qualify for this support next year, and will miss Jan terribly. She has been a great support for our students. Everyone in the community wishes you all well and thanks you for your contributions to our school. Wednesday night I attended the annual Cory-Merrill Neighborhood Association Meeting. I was there with Steve Wera, principal of South High School and Ligia Gibson, our administrative Ritchie intern for Cory and Merrill. We were proud to represent the state of the schools in our neighborhood. After listening to our legislators, Steve, Ligia and I spoke about our school year and all the successes with our students, staff and our facilities. We are lucky to be centered in such a supportive area and to be a part of this community. We have several busy days of year end events ahead. Please join us when you can and support our students. We are hoping for sunny skies tonight for our annual concert on the green. This is a Cory tradition, which takes the whole staff to put on. Whitney Colley has taught our Cory students all the songs, and they are ready to share them with you. Please be a wonderful audience and listen to our kids sing. And hold onto your hat for this last week of the 2009-10 school year. I was honored to have a principal for the day on Monday this week, Tatum Armstrong from room 110. It was refreshing to see the school through her eyes, and her dedication and enthusiasm for the job was commendable!

4th & 5th Graders Skills on Wheels Bike Safety Rescheduled for 5-26
Presented by the Denver Osteopathic Foundation, Skills on Wheels Bicycle Safety for all 4th-5th graders has been rescheduled for Wednesday, May 26. All participants will need to return the Bicycle Skills Parent Consent Form. Any and all 4th-5th graders should bring their own bicycles. There will be about 10 bikes to be shared by any who cannot bring their own.
Did You Know ...
- More than 70 percent of all children ages 5-14 ride bicycles.
- Children ages 14 and under are five times more likely to be injured in a bicycle related crashes than older riders.
- Among children ages 14 and under, more than 80 percent of fatal bicycle related crashes are associated with the bicyclist’s behavior, including riding into a street without stopping, turning left or swerving into traffic that is coming from behind, and running a stop sign.
About this Program The Skills On Wheels program teaches elementary aged children (4th grade and 5th grade) laws and safety practices associated with riding bicycles. This program consists of a 30-minute presentation followed by a skills course in which the child will safely ride their bike through a navigation course. The Skills On Wheels presentation teaches children the importance of wearing a properly fitted helmet, safe riding practices, hand signals and road signs. These skills are then used in the skills course where riders, wearing a fitted helmet, navigate obstacles and stop at checkpoints to learn and use skills from the presentation, for example proper hand signals.
