8. How does Cory's HGT "challenge team classroom" differ from a "self-contained" HGT classroom?

At Cory, grades 1-5 participate in the challenge team model, which allows "identified" highly gifted children to integrate with similar aged children as well as their intellectual peers in the same classroom. We feel this provides intellectual and social stimulation for both groups of children. In a "self-contained" classroom, all the children are identified as highly gifted.

Cory has a full time PE teacher, a full time art teacher, a half time librarian and half time music teacher.

At this point, there is no foreign language instruction during school hours.  However, students may join Club Amigos, an enrichment program, that teaches Spanish to ECE - 5th grade.  For more information, view Enrichment, Club Amigos.

Yes, Cory encourages parent participation and many parents volunteer their time in the classroom.  The faculty welcomes all help.  Classroom volunteering includes room parent, reading and math assistance, field trip chaperones, etc.

We also understand that many parents are unable to be in the classroom because of work or raising younger siblings. There are other volunteer opportunities outside the classroom, so please check with the teacher.

13. When does the "Choice" program start, and what are the chances of being accepted?

The "Choice" program opens enrollment to a school of "Choice" (provided there is room). Denver Public Schools offers two rounds of choice enrollment. Students not picked in the lottery are put on a wait list for the next year.

16. How can I create an academic learning environment in the home?

You can support our efforts by creating an academic learning environment in the home.  Here are some tips:

  • Provide a quiet learning space at home in order to create an everyday learning pattern.
  • Maintain a balance between homework and other activities.
  • Monitor completion of homework.
  • Read at least 30 minutes a day (pupil and/or parent).
  • Compliment your child. The more specific the compliment, the more helpful the feedback.
  • Encourage your child to get involved in extracurricular activities.
  • Illustrate that education is important to you.
